Three reasons why cupping is so healthy

Updated: Aug 11, 2024

Cupping

Cupping has been used for thousands of years as a treatment to increase blood flow. Cupping treatments were also popular in the Middle Ages. Today, cupping, commonly known as cupping, is once again being used with increasing popularity thanks to the popularity of alternative medical treatments. These are the health effects of cupping.

What is cupping?

The English term "cupping" may be new in use, but the principle behind it is far from it. Hijama means nothing more than “cupping.” Cupping has been practiced since the Middle Ages. Cupping therapy is actually several thousand years old. Already in Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt and China, cupping was diligently used to treat a variety of diseases and ailments.

During cupping, smaller areas of skin are suctioned with the help of negative pressure in order to stimulate local blood circulation. The alternative medical procedure is used to treat and relieve a variety of complaints and is used in:

tension

Headache

Joint pain

Stress

depression

fatigue

This is how cupping works

Traditional cupping uses spherical glass vessels with circular holes. These are placed on bare skin on the parts of the body to be treated. The doctor treating you heats the air inside the vessels with fire. There is now less oxygen in the glass vessels placed on the skin than in the outside air: there is negative pressure. This negative pressure absorbs the skin, tissues and underlying muscles by opening the vessels. Local blood circulation in this area is strongly stimulated.

Air can be extracted from cupping cups with fire or air aspirators to create negative pressure inside.

3- The health effects of cupping

1. It can relieve muscle tension

During cupping, the skin and tissues beneath the skin are absorbed and blood flow increases. Mechanical stretching of the skin and small blood vessels in the tissue as well as connective tissue can help relieve tension in the muscles by loosening and tightening the fascia surrounding the muscles. Tangled fascia hinders functional stretching of muscle fibers and can lead to tension and muscle stiffness. These tensions are sometimes relieved by the

suction power of the cupping heads.

2. It can stimulate the nervous system

The strong negative pressure in cupping cups not only stimulates blood circulation locally. The peripheral nervous system can also be stimulated. If neurons are stimulated by negative pressure under the cupping vessels, the electrical potential in the cell can change. Sodium ions then flow into the cell while potassium ions flow out. Such electrical changes sometimes trigger processes in neurons that repair disturbances in neuronal function. In alternative medicine, cupping is also used to treat neurological disorders and nerve-related pain.

3. Relief of inflammation is possible

Increased local blood flow and mechanical stretching of certain areas of skin and tissue can activate heme oxygenase. Heme oxygenase-1 is a protein that breaks down complex iron compounds in the body into iron ions and carbon monoxide. These degradation processes are extremely important in the formation of new blood vessels and the inhibition of inflammatory processes. Local activation of heme oxygenase-1 can therefore reduce inflammation. This may explain why people with chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatism respond favorably to cupping treatments.
