These three foods promote gray hair

Updated: Aug 19, 2024

Gray hair

It's not just genes that are responsible for our gray hair. The wrong diet can also contribute to the fact that we are more likely to turn grey. We tell you about the special foods.

Why do we get gray hair?

Even if gray hair has long shed its old image and a silver man can look really elegant, we do not mind enjoying our natural hair color for as long as possible. Therefore, it is good to know the factors that favor gray hair:

Gray hair is hereditary – some people discover their first gray hair early, others later. However, external influences also contribute to the appearance of gray hair. Long-term stress, taking medications, or even dieting can be other causes. Here are some foods that can contribute to graying of your forehead.

These three foods promote gray hair:

1. Sugar

Not only is refined sugar a fattening agent, it can also damage your natural hair color. why? According to a Swedish study, sweet poison prevents the absorption of vitamins and nutrients necessary for healthy hair follicles and the production of melanin pigment. In addition, protein absorption is affected, which is also important for hair health.

2. Alcohol

Alcohol consumption has a negative impact on your nutrient supply - and in many ways. Alcohol can damage the lining of the stomach and intestines, affecting the absorption of minerals and vitamins from food. A damaged liver is also less able to absorb nutrients. Hence gray hair can be the result.

3. Animal protein

We need protein to maintain our muscles and transport vital substances and also for healthy hair. However, too much animal protein can promote gray hair. Because protein, which the body cannot use, raises the level of uric acid. This leads to hyperacidity, which not only promotes gout but also gray hair. This can be explained by the fact that the body uses its mineral reserves to compensate for acidification. As a result, nutrients are missing elsewhere – for example in melanin production.
