Coconut water is the superfood among drinks. Full of minerals and low in calories, the exotic natural drink has become a real trend among athletes and health-conscious people.

Tropical coconuts have long made themselves comfortable in our climate. Thick, creamy white coconut milk is the basis of many delicious homemade soups and curries, while copra plays a role as a snack or as a healthy breakfast porridge. But for some time now, there's been a new wave of delicious trend spreading from the tropics: coconut water. Water from immature green nuts is aromatic, low in calories and very healthy. Without additives, it is a true natural drink that has many benefits for your health when consumed daily.

1. Coconut water helps in weight loss

If you want to lose some weight or just want to be healthier, changing small habits can help. Instead of drinking sweet juices or lemonade when feeling thirsty, it is recommended to drink coconut water like any other drink. Not only is chilled coconut water a thirst quencher on hot days or after particularly intense gym sessions, this delicious energy water contains almost no calories. Half a liter of natural coconut water contains just under 100 calories. This makes coconut water an ideal alternative for people who don't want to just drink boring mineral water when losing weight.

2. Coconut water is full of electrolytes

Drinking coconut water every day is good for your body. Coconut water is full of important electrolytes such as sodium and potassium, which are important for water balance in the body and normal muscle contractions. We lose a lot of minerals such as sodium and potassium through sweat, especially when exercising. You can combat this loss after strenuous workouts by replenishing electrolytes with coconut water. Compared to traditional mineral water, coconut water contains slightly less sodium, but contains on average 250 times more potassium. It is best to drink coconut water while exercising and maintain mineral balance. As a result, you remain effective longer and recover more quickly from training effort.

3. Coconut water has a soothing effect

The water in coconut is slightly alkaline. This neutralizes the high pH values in the stomach, and stomach acid is no longer so acidic. Coconut water is similarly popular among people who regularly suffer from heartburn. The neutralizing effect can provide a real cure here and soothe an irritated stomach. The high percentage of healthy plant fibers in coconut water also supports healthy digestion. Daily consumption of coconut water works wonders, especially with diarrhea. While fiber helps normalize digestion, the electrolytes and high levels of magnesium in coconut water replenish the body's depleted mineral reserves.

4. Lots of antioxidants in coconut water

Coconut water is full of antioxidants that protect our cells from the harmful effects of free radicals. Free radicals are aggressive oxygen compounds that are created in our bodies as a result of external influences such as ultraviolet radiation and are highly reactive. When free radicals bind to our cells, they cause damage. Oxygen radicals have the most noticeable effect on our skin. The constant attack of radicals on our skin cells ensures the aging of our skin. The antioxidant effect of vitamins and phytochemicals found in coconut water can help fight free radicals and protect the skin from premature aging.

5. May prevent kidney stones

One thing needs to be said clearly up front: whether the risk of kidney stones can actually be reduced by consuming coconut water regularly needs to be considered in further studies. However, in a very small study with eight participants in 2018, researchers were able to determine that participants who drank a lot of coconut water excreted significantly more potassium, chloride, and citrate than those in the comparison group.
