Eye health: Six foods for healthy eyes

Eye Health Foods for healthy eyes

Especially in winter, eyes suffer from dryness from hot air. Anyone who also spends a lot of time in front of a screen will sooner or later suffer from redness and irritation of the eyes. These six foods prevent inflammation and are good for your eyes.

When we stare at screens, we forget to blink regularly. As a result, eyes dry out - warm heating air in winter makes matters worse. Make sure your eyes are strong and healthy with plenty of fluids and a balanced diet rich in vegetables. You cannot improve your eyesight with these foods. However, they work to prevent inflammation and ensure healthy cell renewal.

Eye health: 6 foods for healthy eyes

1. Carrots

Most people probably know the following: Carrots contain beta carotenoids, which are precursors of vitamin A, which are converted into vitamin A in the body when needed. This vitamin promotes the health of your rods, which are responsible for seeing through light and darkness. Therefore, severe vitamin A deficiency can lead to night blindness.

2. Lamb lettuce

Similar to carrots, lamb's lettuce also contains the carotenoids, namely lutein and zeaxanthin. These plant pigments are said to protect the retina from damage that can lead to macular degeneration.

3. Sweet pepper

Bell peppers contain more vitamin C than oranges or lemons. Antioxidants protect the eye from free radicals and thus from inflammation. However, it is heat-labile and water-soluble, which is why you should enjoy peppers raw every now and then.

4. Salmon

Fatty, rich cold-water fish contain valuable omega-3 fatty acids, which not only prevent inflammation but also promote tear production. Foods containing omega-3 such as salmon, as well as flax seeds or linseed oil, protect your eyes from dryness.

5. Whole grains

Oatmeal and whole grain bread are rich in the mineral zinc. This is important for the visual process and also has an antioxidant effect.

6. Spinach

Spinach also contains large amounts of lutein. 150 grams of spinach already covers the recommended daily dose of lutein.

Are lutein supplements good for the eyes?

Lutein is said to have a certain protective function for the retina. The status of the study on this matter is unclear, but many companies and manufacturers promise products containing lutein that will protect the eyes. However, the effects of isolated secondary plant materials have not been adequately researched yet, and there are many indications that only the total package, i.e. a food such as broccoli, including fibre, vitamins and minerals, has a positive effect on health.
