Black, red and white - the berries are very healthy

Looking like blackberries, the berries are a little superfood from the garden.

Berries

Where do berries come from?

The mulberry was originally grown in Asia and North America and cultivated to produce silk. With the Romans, the mulberry became known in Europe. Since then, the berries are ready for harvest in August and September. It is grown in grape-growing regions, where it grows in conditions similar to those of grapes.

Berries are very healthy

Berries are considered a superfood because they contain many healthy nutrients. They are about 2 to 5 cm long, have a sweet and sour taste and can be eaten raw or dried. The berries are also popular as juice or cough syrup because they have an expectorant effect.

Metals

Berries contain a lot of potassium (260 mg per 100 grams), which is important for blood pressure, water balance, nerves and the cardiovascular system. Calcium, magnesium and phosphorus are also found in small quantities in berries.

Resveratrol is an antioxidant and is supposed to strengthen the nerves, protect against negative influences and free radicals, and slow down the aging process.

Buy and use berries

The berries are very delicate and therefore cannot be transported and stored for a long time. For this reason they are rarely available fresh in the supermarket. You will find what you are looking for in the garden at home, on farms where you choose your own food, in farm stores and weekly markets. In the supermarket we find them more in processed form, for example dried and in jam, jelly or juice.

The tiny berries go great with delicious desserts like quark, ice cream, or yogurt or, like blueberries, they can be used in muffins or muffins.
